Advice for young carers

A young carer is a student who cares for, or is affected by, a family member who has a physical or mental illness or who has a problem with the misuse of drugs or alcohol.

The level of responsibility assumed by a young carer is often inappropriate to their age and of a level beyond simply helping out with jobs at home and as such it may impact on the education of the young person. Our aim at Ormiston Sudbury Academy, is therefore to support young carers within the Academy and to signpost support from other agencies.

The Academy works closely with Suffolk Family Carers and National Carers Trust to identify and support young carers and our Suffolk Family Carers dedicated support worker is Keiron Whall. Keiron can come into the Academy to speak with young carers and he can be contacted on 01473 835430 or at keiron.whall@suffolkfamilycarers.org.

We have been raising awareness of young carers at the Academy through staff training, assemblies and student/staff noticeboards. Students and parents can contact Mrs Gilson, who is the Young Carers Lead within the Academy to discuss any aspects of young carer support. Mrs Gilson can be found in the Rosa Parks House Office or can be contacted on 01787 375131 or by email.
