Sport – BTEC

Specification title

National Extended Certificate in Sport (1 A level) and National Diploma in Fitness Services (2 A level)
Equivalent in size to 1 A level or 2 A levels (depending on the course chosen.)

Entry requirements

Level 2 BTEC Sport or B at GCSE PE, regular participation in sport, desirable C in GCSE science, a genuine interest in sport.

Overview

The BTEC Level 3 Sport course is suited to students who have an appetite to develop their skills and knowledge in Sport. Having a genuine interest in Sport is vital, high fitness levels and a member of a sports team or club are expected.

Course structure

The 1 A level course (National Extended Certificate in Sport) is made up of four units:

Externally assessed units

  • Unit 1: Anatomy & Physiology (1.5 hour exam)
    You will explore how the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems function and the fundamentals of the energy systems.
  • Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industry (seen written exam)
    Gain an understanding of the knowledge and skills required for different career pathways in the sports industry. Learners will take part in, and reflect on, a personal skills audit, career action plan and practical interview assessment activities.

Internally assessed units

  • Unit 7: Practical Sports Performance
    Study the skills, techniques, tactics and rules of selected sports through active participation in individual/team sports.
  • Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being
    Take on the role of a Personal Training, exploring client screening and lifestyle assessment, fitness training methods and fitness programming.

The 2 A level course (National Diploma in Fitness Services) has an additional five units. These include Work Experience, Sports Leadership, Instructing gym based exercise and Self-employment in the sports industry.

Opportunities in the Sport & Fitness industry are many and varied. They could include: Sports and Leisure Centre Management, Sports Development Work, Sports Coaching, PE Teaching, Sports Administration, Events Promotion.
